Cobá, located about 30 minutes southeast of Tulum, is one of the last discovered ruins, meaning it has not been significantly affected by tourism.
This archaeological site was built between two lagoons in the middle of the jungle. The main pyramid, Nohuch Mul, which means "big hill" in Mayan, is the highest of the entire Yucatan Peninsula at 42 metres high and has a spectacular view of the rainforest.
Cobá is translated as "water stirred by the wind". Between the years 400 and 1100 AD, this was one of the largest cities of the Mayan Classic era, accommodating about 50,000 inhabitants.
